A full-service Volunteer Center is a community's local knowledge leader on volunteering.
It's the place where people find the most up-to-date opportunities to serve.
It is also, by definition, the place where nonprofit organizations go for all manner of
volunteer management; i.e., how to more effectively recruit volunteers, how to create volunteer opportunities and how to make their volunteer programs work.
In addition, it's the responsibility of a full-service volunteer center to keep an eye on the community's most urgent needs and respond with volunteer action.
Step Up! is honored to fill the role of full-service Volunteer Center. Our goals are reflected
in our mission to inspire, connect, engage, and support volunteers who make a difference
in our community.
We Inspire . . .
• by honoring outstanding community volunteers through CELEBRATION OF SERVICE.
Connect . . .
• by getting word out to concerned citizens through VOLUNTEER CONNECTION.
• by offering volunteer opportunities and direct sign-up online through 1-800-volunteer.org.
• by serving community-minded corporations through CORPORATE CONNECTION.
We have supported the volunteer spirit since 2005. To view more of Step Up's! past, click Step Up History. The success of any endeavor is dependent on leadership and management.
Step Up! has been blessed with an excellent staff and a committed Board.

Step Up History
1992
• Historically, nine years ago 125 Horry County residents identified diverse involvement in community activities as a need during a community assessment survey. Community Planning Council study showed the need for a central volunteer clearing house that could bring together organizations that serve community needs with those willing to serve.
2003–2004
• Community Advisory Committee conducted community assessment research to provide the platform in establishing a community volunteer center.
2005
• Step Up! was launched as an independent agency. Valerie Harrington and Dr. Pete Barr serve as the first Executive Director and the first Board President, respectively. John S. & James L. Knight Foundation provided the bulk of the new organization's funding for the next three years.
2006
• Step Up! will be the centralized source that provides schedules of community civic engagement, training opportunities for volunteers, leadership through civic involvement, registration information, and support to local agencies in developing community projects. Step Up! will become the one stop shop for all volunteers in Horry County.
